A witness to the aftermath of a serious accident near the southwestern Manitoba town of Carberry says he saw a burning vehicle in a ditch just after noon Thursday.
John Proven also noticed a nearby semi-trailer truck with a burnt front end and said the burning vehicle in the ditch resembled a van.
Proven estimates saw about 20 police vehicles and seven or eight ambulances at the scene.
“I’ve never seen such a big accident,” Proven told CBC News in a telephone interview.
“It’s a little shocking.”
RCMP has so far provided few details about the crash, except that Mounties are at the scene of what they described as a “very serious collision” at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 5 just north of Carberry.
In a tweet just before 1pm, RCMP asked people to avoid the area and yield to officers and emergency services, saying highway closures were in effect.
STARS air ambulances from Regina and Winnipeg were also dispatched to an emergency in the Carberry area around noon, according to posts on their Twitter account.
