Cheap travel insurance has a reputation for being quite boring to work in. While like any other job it has its boring routine moments, these are made up for by the occasional inspired funny travel insurance stories you hear. It’s hard to say how many of them are either exaggerated, highly embellished, or just made up, but I still found a few of these travel insurance stories that made me laugh while researching this article, and that’s good enough for me.

Here are 13 funny travel insurance stories. While 13 is traditionally an unlucky number, quite a few on this list will consider themselves lucky to be covered by understanding travel insurance companies! The rest of the rejected will no doubt have learned an invaluable life lesson!

  • Cheeky monkeys cause chaos

According to this story (tail?), a group of cheeky monkeys conspired to ruin a couple’s romantic trip to Malaysia. Due to the heat, the couple left their chalet window open during the day while going out, but regretted their decision when they returned to discover their clothes and belongings scattered throughout the surrounding resort and adjacent rainforest. Fortunately, the couple’s insurance company was understanding and made sure they didn’t have to wear the same clothes for the rest of their trip!

  • LOTS of Bombay mix

Do you know Bombay Mix? The spicy Indian snack food. A traveler claimed to have lost £600 worth of belongings on his way back from holiday and tried to claim his travel insurance. With Bombay Mix costing less than £1 per 250g bag, a conservative estimate is that the man would need to carry over 80kg of the snack to have spent £600! Pretty hard misplaced you would have thought, and the travel insurance company agreed and refused to pay the claim.

  • A sting in the tail

A traveler lost his wallet while exploring Natanya in Israel. But instead of filing a police report and contacting his travel insurance companies, the brave individual tried to fish his wallet out of the pit – only to be stung by a venomous scorpion that had made the area its home! The man’s treatment (and presumably his missing wallet) was covered by his travel insurance.

  • Geronimo!

This family won the dubious honor of most unlucky on the list, and this family’s camping trip went awry when a parachutist from the nearby airbase missed its target and landed right on the family tent. The camping equipment was ruined and to add insult to injury, they were not covered for accidental damage so had to foot the bill themselves.

  • The joke is about the burglar?

A fairly routine claim for a stolen makeup bag took a funny turn when it was revealed that the victim had put her medical hemorrhoid cream in an empty moisturizer earlier in the holiday. While French police continued to search for a suspiciously smooth-faced thief, the woman’s travel insurance company paid for the missing makeup, perfume and lotions.

  • Wrong airport, wrong country!

A man who claimed a holiday when he was denied boarding a flight was turned down when it emerged that his flight was not from Manchester in northwestern England, but from Manchester, New Hampshire in the United States.

  • Some claims are just not worth the deductible!

Here’s a tip for you – if you have a deductible to pay on a £50 claim, make sure your stolen property is worth at least £50.01! A traveler who had his bag stolen while on holiday had his claim denied, when it was determined that the full inventory of the contents was: 1x bottle of water, 1x newspaper and 1x packet of mints. No wonder his claim for cheap travel insurance was rejected.

  • Criminals aren’t the only animals ruining your trip

If you’re vacationing in the Black Forest, you might want to make sure you lock up properly when you leave the house. A family came back to their chalet to find their house had been invaded by a hungry goat, who had eaten their way through their wallets, passports and sandwiches. Their claim for new passports and wallets was denied for negligence in leaving the chalet wide open.

  • Coconut shy

If you plan to relax under a tree in Sri Lanka, it is worth checking your place carefully, as one traveler found after receiving a concussion from a falling coconut. The injury knocked her out, which may sound unlikely until you consider that the average fresh coconut weighs 2 kilograms and their trees grow up to 30 meters high. A coconut traveling at 53 miles per hour is no joke, and unsurprisingly the traveler has paid back £400 medical bills.

  • Coconuts lost

On the other hand, others apparently can’t live without their coconuts: one couple returned from Mauritius to find that their local products had disappeared. Claiming two lost coconuts might seem like a reasonable idea on paper, but with each costing less than a pound to replace, and an initial deductible of £50, it’s no wonder the travel insurers turned this one down.

  • A what!?

Every once in a while you hear a claim for something that’s just totally baffling, and it was for Direct Line, who reportedly received a claim for a “guitar made out of a pumpkin.”

  • A burning desire for a drink

At the ironically labeled ‘Fire Bar’ in Greece, a reveler paid the price for ‘needing a drink’ when she waited at the bar to be served despite a loud buzzer and the rapid departure of others calling for a pint. Unsurprisingly, the buzzer turned out to be a fire alarm—a fact she finally appreciated as flames engulfed the area. She escaped at the scene with third degree burns and £300 in medical costs which her travel insurance company covered.

  • Someone is lying!

Finally more of a fact than a funny travel insurance story, but it is believed that there have been more claims for stolen £1000 Rolex Oysters watches than have been manufactured. It seems some people have been creative with their travel insurance policies…
