An employee of a dementia care facility in Diamond Bar was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of killing two elderly women under his care, authorities said.

According to Lieutenant Daniel Vizcarra, sheriff’s deputies received a call around 8 a.m. to the Happy Home Care for Elderly, a residential care facility located in a four-bedroom suburban home.

Two “extremely elderly women … were found in a room in the house,” Vizcarra said. Paramedics arrived and tried to provide assistance, but both women died on the spot.

Investigators have not released the identities and ages of either victim. Their manner of death was investigated by the LA County Medical Examiner-Coroner, but Vizcarra dismissed online reports of a shooting. “No one was shot,” he said.

The resident janitor, Jianchun Li, was arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of murdering both women. Li, 40, was held in jail in lieu of $4 million bail, according to booking records. He will appear at the Pomona courthouse on Tuesday.

The Happy Home Care for Elderly, a state-licensed residential care facility, praises its “home-like environment” and “well-trained staff to care for your loved ones,” according to its website. The house can accommodate up to six residents, according to state records; four other residents of the home were unharmed, Vizcarra said.

The murders came as a shock to the quiet neighborhood of San Gabriel Valley.

“We never thought something like this could happen,” Ivonne Trypucko, the manager of a swim club across the street from the retirement home, told KTLA.
