Just last April 24, an incident was recorded in Chiquimula, where the roof of the Juan Manuel Aguirre Official Urban School for Girls No. 1 collapsed after the impact of a structure that gave way to heavy rains.
Relief bodies reported on that occasion that two teachers and several students were injured by the incident.
Two intern teachers recounted the moments of anguish they experienced together with 18 girls, one of whom lost her life due to what happened: Kimberly Evanelia Gómez, 5 years old.
Some of the students were transferred to the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the capital, where this Wednesday, May 3, the state of health of Cataleya Alexandra Chasmaray and Alma Abigail Cordón was reported.
Dr. Juan Carlos Reyes, head of the Pediatrics area, reported that both children under the age of 5 suffered head trauma, for which they were received in critical condition.
A tomography was performed on each one and it showed fractures. Chasmaray had to be taken to the operating room for bone removal.
Then, both were taken to the intensive critical care area, where they were on special medications for cerebral edema. Also, with a fan to get oxygen to the brain.
Reyes added that on Tuesday, May 2, they were transferred to a bedridden service, which means that the ventilator and other medications have already been withdrawn.
He stressed that both patients are stable and although further evaluations must be made, for now their nervous system is preserved.
He said that the critical phase is resolved and now comes the follow-up part to find out how the health of the two girls is evolving.
For now, the studies revealed that they do not see any paralysis or something more serious in one of the girls, but in the future it is necessary to verify how the patient will behave.
One of the girls has swollen eyes, so they performed ophthalmological evaluations and these indicated that there is no damage.
They hope to perform other studies on them and if all goes well, they could discharge them or transfer them to a hospital in Chiquimula.
The minor underwent surgery was for a skull bone that sank, that is, bone lifting so as not to injure the brain.
Reyes said that in six months or a year it will be possible to identify if there was any damage or sequelae to the girls.

While the Ministry of Health reported that the two minors who were in the Chiquimula Hospital Intensive Care Unit have already left that area and are in bed and recovering.
In total there were 10 students boarding, one of them died.
