Hormone imbalance and female infertility are closely linked as the former plays a crucial factor in the development of infertility. But the question that comes to mind is, how can hormonal balance have such a drastic effect on female fertility? Detailed understanding of hormonal imbalance will solve our questions. When the healthy hormones in our body experience an allergic reaction, it is medically referred to as a hormonal imbalance. The production of estrogen and progesterone, the primary hormones in women, varies considerably due to the imbalance and is mainly caused by stress, inadequate nutrition and ovulation. This condition is most often experienced by women in their late 20s and mid-40s.

Conditions such as glandular problems, ovulation disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome, premature menopause and abnormal cervical mucus affect female fertility. Gland problems arise when hormonal abnormalities plague the primary glands, such as the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland. These glands are responsible for the production level of reproductive hormones which is directly proportional to the fertility ratio. During polycystic ovary syndrome, the amount of follicle-stimulating hormones decreases, which hinders ovarian stimulation in the females. With cervical mucus irregularities, the cervical mucus tends to be too thick for sperm to enter during the ovulation period or not enough cervical mucus is produced. This deficiency can be overcome by using the drug clomiphene citrate as it increases the production of cervical mucus by making appropriate changes in the level of estrogen in the body. The onset of premature menopause is characterized by the lack of hormones essential for ovulation.

Hormonal imbalance also affects male fertility. The most common syndrome in men with fertility problems is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. People who suffer from this syndrome have testes that do not function properly due to the inappropriate stimulation by the follicle-stimulating hormones, gonadotropic hormones and luteinizing hormone, produced in the pituitary gland. These patients have little sex drive, although this syndrome can be cured by using injections filled with gonadotropin hormones.
