COLUMBUS, Mont. (AP) — A bridge over Montana’s Yellowstone River collapsed overnight, sending parts of a freight train traveling across it crashing into the water below.

There was no immediate word from authorities as to whether anyone was injured. Montana Rail Link officials could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday.

Numerous tank cars were partially submerged in the river early Saturday, and railroad workers were on scene near the city of Columbus, about 40 miles (about 64 kilometers) west of Billings. An Associated Press reporter witnessed a yellow liquid pouring from tankers.

The river had swollen from recent heavy rains, though it’s unclear if that contributed to the bridge’s collapse.

The Yellowstone saw a record flood in 2022 that wreaked havoc on Yellowstone National Park and adjacent towns in Montana.
