“My name is Ajnur. I am from Afghanistan. I love Afghanistan”…

This expression of a little girl, who has left her hometown against her will, would touch anyone.

As of August 2021, about 2,400 Afghans left their country and took refuge in Albania, waiting to leave for America. Some of them have left, but there are others who are waiting to join other family members who have been evacuated to different places.

“My name is Mukades, I am 5 years old. I came with my mother, father, sister and brother”.

Leaving was a trauma. But the children have experienced even more what was happening in their country and moving to another country where the mother’s language is not spoken. But for them, the YWCA with the support of Unicef and USAid has set up a garden, so that they can have fun and socialize with each other. Parents even gather in meetings where they can learn lessons towards good parenting. Meanwhile, a school has also been opened for students.

“We have been here since 2021. Our children experienced it very badly. At least here in the kindergarten they play, have fun and it helps them get rid of the bad moments. Even for us parents, courses are held, where we share our experiences with each other on how to educate our children and how to explain the whole situation to them”, says the mother.

Children can communicate with educators in their mother tongue who are trying to learn English. Each of them has a sad story.

“After the government changed, I had a difficult situation, I thought the end of life, I thought the end of freedom. But luckily we managed to come to Albania. Experiencing conflict is not easy. The beginnings were so difficult, we experienced stress. But thankfully I am working with children, who give me strength and hope to stand up and make a contribution to my Afghans. I am here with my parents, while I have one brother in Austria, one in America and one left in Afghanistan. It is not clear how long I will stay here. I have completed all the procedures, I am waiting to flee to America”, says the Afghan educator.

“Opening the school is very important as it helps the children not to stop learning, but we teach them to be skilled and prepared when they go to Canada or America. In the beginning, there were 276 students, but every week new ones leave and come”, says the teacher.
