Albania’s Deputy Minister of Interior Andi Mahila and Greece’s Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Eleftherios Ikonomu inaugurated today in Kakavija the start of the operation of the Greek-Albanian police and customs coordination center.

The center, which has been set up on the Greek side of the border, will be staffed by personnel from both sides and will be a link for the rapid exchange of information using all channels in both countries to fight cross-border crime.

The center with 10 employees, 5 Greeks and 5 Albanians, will deal with 16 different types of international crime from cases of illegal immigration from third countries, smuggling of people and goods, violent extremism, recruitment of foreign fighters, trafficking of narcotics and motor vehicles.

“This center is a step taken with mutual trust and as a function of the will that countries have to fight cross-border crime. We have previously proven on our borders with Turkey and Bulgaria that these centers work. We very much hope that we will have results that support the integration efforts of Albania”, said Elefterios Ikonomu.

Mahila also expressed satisfaction with the agreement and said that the center will track crimes that took more time to identify in the past.

This new structure does not add barriers for citizens at the borders and does not have a routine control function.
