The American expert and senior associate at the Hudson Institute, Luke Coffey, commented on the recent events in the north of Kosovo.

As he spoke about the importance of the Balkans for stability in Europe, he emphasized that the tensions in the north have weakened Kosovo, strengthened Serbia, strengthened Russia and divided the transatlantic community.

“Violence erupted in northern Kosovo last week between ethnic Serbs and the NATO peacekeeping mission, KFOR. Clashes left NATO troops wounded, Serbia emboldened, Kosovo weakened, Russia empowered and the transatlantic community divided,” Coffey wrote.

According to him, the Balkans continues to remain an area of instability that policy makers should not ignore.

“After the end of the Cold War and the disintegration of Yugoslavia into seven new countries, the region suffered a series of deadly conflicts that were brought under control only after external military intervention. Even today, the security situation remains fragile. The recent events in Kosovo remind us of this,” he added.

Coffey has emphasized that the events in Kosovo could destabilize the Balkans at a time when the geopolitical situation in the transatlantic community is already tense due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

“The region has been a major source of conflict in Europe for centuries. It cannot be overlooked and constructive international engagement in the Balkans is key for regional stability and security”, he said.
