The explosion occurred shortly after a similar incident in the Mastung district of neighboring Balochistan province on Friday killed at least 52 people and injured dozens of others.

Rescue officials said there were between 30 and 40 people in the mosque performing congregational Friday prayers when the explosion occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“We now have five confirmed casualties, while another six seriously injured have been taken to hospital,” Bilal Faizi, spokesman for the Rescue 1122 helpline, told Al Jazeera.

Faizi said the blast caused the roof of the mosque to collapse as sermons for Friday prayers continued.

He said heavy machinery is being used to remove the debris from the roof. Many people are still feared trapped under the rubble, he added.
