The British government on Monday expressed its “unwavering commitment” to co-operate with Sweden to ensure the successful conclusion of Sweden’s NATO membership ahead of the military alliance’s July summit in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

The statement came after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s meeting with his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson, in London.

The leaders discussed the strong friendship between Britain and Sweden, including defence, security, trade and technology.

Following the meeting, a joint statement was issued emphasizing the importance of Sweden’s participation, with the United Kingdom claiming that the country’s participation would not only strengthen NATO but also enhance Euro-Atlantic security.

“Sweden is strongly aligned with NATO principles and values, has years of training and operational experience with Allies, including the United Kingdom, and will bring a modern and well-trained army to the Alliance,” the statement said.

The two countries also expressed their condemnation of “Russia’s illegal and unreasonable invasion of Ukraine”.

“We reiterate our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We are leaders in providing military, humanitarian, economic and legal support to Ukraine.”

Both countries said they see China as a “systemic challenge”.

They urged China not to “provide material assistance to Russia or its Russian proxies in Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.”

After the Russia-Ukraine war, Sweden wants to join NATO. However, Turkey, which has been a NATO member for over 70 years, has blocked the Scandinavian country’s membership process, especially by expressing its concern over the PKK terrorist organization’s presence in Sweden.

Earlier this year, Turkey approved Finland’s NATO membership, but is withdrawing Sweden’s membership.

NATO leaders will meet in Vilnius on 11-12 July, and alliance members are expected to increase their long-term support for Ukraine and further strengthen deterrence and defense.
