Drug rehabilitation or drug rehabilitation is an umbrella term for the series of steps of medical and/or psychotherapeutic treatment to overcome drug addiction. Several types of rehab programs are offered, including: residential treatment, local support groups, comprehensive care centers, and outpatient.

In this article, I discuss the characteristics of an ideal residential treatment center for drug addiction. Because of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Principles for Effective Drug Addiction Treatment, my experience working with people who are addicted, and my research on drug addiction treatment centers around the world, an Ideal Residential Drug Addiction Treatment Center has three characteristics:

  1. Troubleshooting
  2. Variety of programs
  3. Effective support

Troubleshooting

The first step to get rid of the addiction is problem solving. The fact that no two people are exactly the same, they have different bodies, beliefs, values, feelings, behaviors and environments.

Accordingly, they will have different treatments.

Each addiction recovery plan is tailored to suit the individual characteristics of each client.

Each person’s addiction is a specific problem that needs a unique solution.

Each person with addictive behavior is a unique individual, and successful overcoming of addiction depends on a tailored strategy.

Going into a recovery program with your eyes closed and hassle-free means going down the road to failure.

Variety of programs

Any rehabilitation center that offers more varied programs has more capacity than the center that offers only one program.

Characteristics of a suitable program, including:

  • To learn more about addiction, detox, recovery and relapse prevention plan.
  • To be flexible
  • It meets multiple needs of the individual
  • Be monitored
  • Manageable
  • To learn coping tools and skills for preventing drug relapse

Effective support

What is an effective support program?

An effective support program has two characteristics:

1. It has an extensive program

To be effective, the support program must provide comprehensive counseling that is medical, psychological, social and occupational. It is also important that this program is appropriate for the individual’s need.

2. Sufficient recovery time

Recovery from addictive behavior is a lengthy process. The appropriate length of support depends on the person’s type of problem, needs, and shaping new habits. I have divided addiction recovery into three phases; green phase, yellow phase and red phase.

In the green phase, people live in rehab. Very few people have a relapse at this stage.

When people go home after a drug rehabilitation program, the yellow phase begins. In the absence of an effective support program, some people will relapse.

The red phase is when the people deal with stressful events. In the absence of an effective support program, most people will relapse. Without an effective support program, your rehabilitation program will become an expensive joke! Because not only will you waste your time and money, but your self-steam will also be damaged.
