As patients become better informed about the types of orthodontic options available to them, many are asking orthodontists about options that aren’t as noticeable as traditional braces. While a treatment such as Invisalign can correct a wide variety of orthodontic problems and advancements in technology continue to broaden the spectrum of cases treatable with Invisalign, there remain some cases that are too complex for Invisalign alone.

In those cases, orthodontics experts often advise combining the old with the new: traditional braces and/or appliances in combination with Invisalign treatment.

Combining old and new
There are many traditional techniques such as using rubber bands and various devices that can be used in conjunction with Invisalign to achieve optimal results for patients.

Orthodontists may also use partial braces for some teeth that are more difficult to move with Invisalign. But even in those cases, patients don’t have to worry about conspicuous braces on their teeth. Often the braces should be placed only on the back molars or the lower teeth, neither of which are very noticeable. They also use clear or ceramic braces that more closely match the color of the natural teeth, making them less visible.

Invisalign cases that may require the use of some braces include severe rotation or tilting of the teeth or the long-distance root movement of the teeth. Rotation is when a tooth has turned so far that it faces sideways instead of being properly aligned along the surrounding teeth.

The roots of the teeth should be straight, just as the crown of the teeth should be straight. Rubber bands are often used in conjunction with Invisalign to correct overbite or underbite or to help align and correct the bite. In those cases, clear fasteners are attached to the prongs to provide a stable mechanism for the rubber bands to be attached to.

With the use of some appliances and rubber bands in conjunction with Invisalign for more severe cases, orthodontists ensure they get the best results.

Invisalign and Orthognathic Surgery
The orthodontists also use Invisalign on patients who need orthognathic surgery. In orthognathic surgery, skeletal elements of the face are surgically repositioned to achieve an appropriate functional and anatomical appearance in patients with facial structure and growth defects that cannot be effectively treated with braces alone.
