After discovering that convenience and CBD stores in Connecticut sell cannabis products with higher THC levels than regulated pharmacies, lawmakers on Tuesday imposed new restrictions on the amount of marijuana’s main intoxicating ingredient in these products.
The bipartisan legislation, which the state House passed by a near-unanimous vote, marks the first major update to the state’s fledgling recreational marijuana program that began in January.
“All we’re trying to do is make sure that all products sold in Connecticut with a significant amount of THC are sold in our regulated marketplace through the pharmacies, where there are labeling requirements, there are per-package requirements, there are per-container requirements are,” said Rep. Mike D’Agostino, D-Hamden, who held a handful of large, colorful THC gummies that were legally sold in an unregulated store because of a “loophole involving CBD stores.”
“I’ve heard from voters who are concerned about the poisoning of young children. That really happens at gas stations and other outlets that sell things they shouldn’t,” said the legislator, who helped draft this bill. “These things, in my opinion, should really be limited to someone who has a license to sell and distribute marijuana and not show up at your local gas station.”
