Another key item on the agenda was the development of a specialized tool for capturing and documenting community mental health indicators. Establishing a standardized system would facilitate accurate monitoring and evaluation of community mental health services, enabling targeted interventions and better outcomes for maternal patients. This initiative reflects the Department of Mental Health’s commitment to evidence-based practices and data-driven decision-making.

The division underlined their commitment to accessible mental health care and emphasized the importance of the Mental Health Guidance Policy launched in 2022. Surprising statistics were shared at the meeting, which revealed that 50% of referral cases in Kwale are related to maternal health, including teenage pregnancy. and the lack of support for young mothers in the community. These challenges perpetuate stigma and underscore the urgent need for tailored mental health support and community awareness.

Through joint efforts and a shared vision, the Department of Mental Health aims to improve maternal mental health outcomes and promote a supportive environment for maternal patients. This important step towards inclusion represents a forward-thinking approach to healthcare, ensuring that maternal mental health remains at the forefront of the broader healthcare agenda.
