Organic food is not new. It’s more of a new realization in the 1990s. We came to a better understanding of how conventional foods differ. It all started in the 1940s during World War II when the armed forces used the chemical such as ammonium nitrate for explosives and found that it helped fertilize the crops. The variety of chemicals used by armed forces is shifting towards agricultural uses. The conventional food transforms our lives through the miraculous discovery that chemicals increase production capacity. It elevates our ability to do more than what traditional life has to offer, instead of slow, manual, and seasonal replacement timing with fast, automatic, on-time calls.

By definition, organic food is classified as produced without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, genetic engineering, growth hormones, radiation treatments and antibiotics. In groceries, the organic food can be misleading because of the branded packaging. The “100% organic” on the packaging means that the products and meat use all organic ingredients. “Made with Organic Ingredients” use 70% organic ingredients. The “organic” on the packaging means that there are 95% organic ingredients. Rarely do you see a package with word, transition period, is the company communicating that the organization and the farmer have a 3 year schedule to go from conventional to organic in farming. It’s always good to follow “USDA Organic” on the package. The government has a role in organic products and meat also sets the standard for the farmer to adhere to developing organic food.

Changes

The conventional food has increased our knowledge of the potential risks it can pose from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, so the organic farmer has taken a closer look and reinvented the better way to grow their products through innovation biology. The farmers have replaced the conventional method by using natural fertilizers to nourish the soil. Bring in the insect predator such as the bee to prevent other insects from attacking the crops and to promote pollination. The farmer invests more energy to understand the science of cropping. With a better knowledge of agriculture, the farmer uses crop rotation, mechanical tillage and management is more manual by pulling the weeds by hand.

The assets of organic farming contribute to restoring an ecological balance that helps save energy and protect the environment due to the occurrence of soil fertility or pests. By being ecologically aware, it improves biodiversity by having a better genetic pool to increase plant and animal species. Reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides raises agriculture naturally to help prevent nutrient losses and also reduce the greenhouse effect that global warming causes.

Cons

We recognize that organic produce and meats play a major health role in helping our bodies by providing high-quality nutrients that are free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides known to cause cancer risks. On the other side of the coin, organic products and meat have their own downside. The organic farmer has chosen to use natural manure. One of the natural fertilizers is the use of manure. The use of manure can spread the contaminants if mishandled. Fungicides are not allowed as it involves chemical treatment and we run the risk of getting mycotoxins from molds in food. The meat may contain E. coli bacteria, as the animal must be free of antibiotics.

Bioengineering such as genetic engineering in products and meat is considered conventional. The aim of bioengineering is to solve the world’s hunger problems and to be able to grow anytime, anywhere with higher quality nutrients packaged in food. The resistance of the conventional method can affect the demand for food. Not allowing the chemical treatment also shortens the chance of the shelf life of foodstuffs. Organic food is expensive because the supply is small, which creates more demand. The labor for organic food is greater, so it increases the cost of production.
