“It’s just good to talk. I used to just not talk to anyone and keep it all bottled up and that’s when you get lower and lower and lower.

The flame-haired star was devastated when music producer Jamal, who gave him his first big break, passed away in February 2022 at the age of 31 after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by cocaine and booze at the age of 31.

Speaking about how his new song ‘Eyes Closed’ is about his late friend, Ed said: “We both lived in the same part of London and I found that after he passed, everywhere I went I thought I’d see him because it was all the places we’ve been. The song is essentially that.”

When asked by presenter Jonathan if the song is difficult to play on stage, Ed said: “It’s different now that it’s out. I think songs are so personal when you write them and they belong to you. The first time I ever played it, I did a gig at Union Chapel. I cried when I introduced it, I cried during it and I cried after. Because the song was still mine, it was still my story.”

Ed explained the meaning behind another song on the album, adding about ‘No Strings’: “2022 was a year where a lot happened with me and my family and I sort of said to my wife, ‘If we can get through this come, it’s a breeze from here. Anything can happen from here and it’s going well.'”
