KARACHI, Pakistan – Noor Jehan, a female elephant at Pakistan’s Karachi Zoo, is seriously ill after falling into a pond in a small enclosure on Thursday.

Immediately after the fall, Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization, advised that 17-year-old Noor Jehan be lifted with a crane, ropes and belts.

Since then she lies visibly weak, with limited freedom of movement, on a pile of sand, propped up against the only tree in the fence.

“Her condition is currently very critical. We are doing everything we can to save her,” Four Paws spokeswoman Katharina Braun said by email.

“It is very important that she gets up as soon as possible, lying on the floor for too long … can be life threatening.”

Noor Jehan is suffering from a massive hematoma, or pool of clotted blood, in her abdomen, in addition to intestinal problems, Four Paws member Dr Amir Khalil said during his visit to treat her last week. The vet from Egypt had given Noor Jehan a good chance of survival.

Mr. Khalid Hashmi was sacked as director of Karachi Zoo on April 8 over complaints of negligence.

His successor, Mr. Kanwar Ayub, said that in the week following the vet’s visit, he was unsure whether the complaints were justified.

“However, there has been no negligence in the three days I have been appointed, guaranteed,” he said Friday, pointing to possible negligence over time.
