Being under constant surveillance is something Elizabeth Holmes will have to get used to after she finally begins her 11-year prison sentence on May 30.

According to John Carreyrou’s book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup‘, the founder of Theranos was obsessed with keeping track of the hours her employees put in, and would find ways to keep them working late.

One of these approaches was for dinner to be delivered to Theranos’ office every night. However, Holmes timed the delivery between 8 and 8:30 p.m., meaning staff often didn’t get off work until 10 p.m., according to the book.

Carreyrou reports for The Wall Street Journal Theranos’ faulty blood testing equipment exposed. For the book, he spoke to dozens of insiders from the company, which was once valued at $9 billion.

Ordering communal dinners was reportedly one of Holmes’ unusual tactics, which tried to model himself on Steve Jobswould use to both inspire and intimidate Theranos employees.

According to the book, Holmes’s assistants would monitor employees’ arrivals and departures every day, while IT staff would check the software on employees’ computers. She also had her team add employees on Facebook and tell Holmes what they were posting, Carreyrou wrote.

According to The Journal and an inmate handbook for the Bryan camp, she will be woken up daily at 6:00 am and counting five employees daily.

Holmes’ lawyers did not respond to an Insider request for comment.
