FIRST ON FOX: A mother of three boys, Dr. Nicole Saphier, a Fox News contributor, has co-written a new children’s book with her middle son.
The message is both urgent and eternal.
“Last summer, my son was one of many kids who got bad news from a doctor,” she told Fox News Digital in a telephone interview Wednesday, just a day before her book’s publication.
“And to deal with that, he started writing a lot,” she said.

“He’s always been very artistic, very musical – but he really started writing short stories.”
Dr. Saphier said her son “loved writing about this little family of monkeys. And I wanted to help turn hard times into something positive for him and our family.”

And so, she explained, when it came to the idea of turning the story into a published book, “I went with Brave Books because I love their philosophy and what they’re about — faith, family, love. And they thought it was a good idea.”
“We really need to teach our kids that family is to be cherished.”
The new children’s book, complete with full-color illustrations, can “help other kids who might get some bad news — whether from a doctor or at school — and just remind them of the importance of the family unit,” she said. noting that mother and son wrote the book together.
At this point in American culture, Dr. Saphier added, “it just feels like society is teaching our kids to depend less and less on family. And we really need to teach our kids that family is to be cherished.”

She said, “Parents and children should be closely linked, not separated.”
This is especially true during difficult times, she said.
“Then you really need that family unit.”
Dr. Saphier, a board-certified radiologist, is currently director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center-Monmouth in New Jersey; she has advanced fellowship training in breast and oncology imaging from the Mayo Clinic.
“Jeff learns how much his family really means to him – and how important it is to lean on them through tough times.”
She is also an assistant professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

Dr. Saphier said there are some similarities in the story to her own family in real life.
For example, the “father monkey” in the story has blue eyes, just like her own husband, she said — and the three young monkeys in the book also have blue eyes, just like her three sons.

But the mama monkey has green eyes, just like her.
“There are very little things — little nuances in the book — that people may or may not pick up on that reflect us,” she said.

She said it’s no coincidence that the family in the story is very musical, just like her family.
But “what I really loved about the book,” she added, “was that instead of letting Jeff (the character based on her son Hudson) remain despondent about the bad news he received, he made a ‘ would if I could’ makes the list, which helps bring his family to life.”
And “although it’s a challenging situation, Jeff is learning how much his family really means to him — and how important it is to lean on them through tough times.”
Fox News Digital spoke with Dr. Nicole Saphier on the new book she wrote with her middle son. She said her family is very interested in being together as much as possible, rather than letting each child or family member go his or her own way. “Life passes quickly,” she said. (Fox News radio)
The message, she said, “is to remind people how important the family unit is — and while it may not solve all of life’s problems or challenges, things are more bearable and better as long as the family is together.”

She said that right now her family is very interested in being together as much as possible, rather than each child or family member doing his or her own thing.
“Life passes quickly,” she said.
