A Florida man was arrested Sunday after he cut off his ankle bracelet, barricaded himself in an apartment and jumped from an apartment window, officials said.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Sandalwood apartments in the town of Wildwood around 3:54 a.m. Sunday after multiple reports of a driver breaking into apartments after driving a car into one of the buildings.

When deputies arrived, they discovered the suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Corey Michael Payton, who had barricaded himself in a second-floor apartment he was breaking into, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The SWAT team from the sheriff’s office eventually responded to the scene, and a crisis negotiation team verbally contacted Payton through a second-story window he had broken out.

Officials had spent hours negotiating with Payton to surrender peacefully before he dove from the window of the second-floor apartment and landed on the floor.

An arrest warrant was issued on June 9 after he violated his parole, the sheriff’s office said. Payton has an extensive criminal history with 139 previous felony charges and a total of 30 felony convictions.

Payton’s charges for Sunday’s incident are still under investigation, but include burglary of an occupied home, burglary of a residence and multiple counts of criminal mischief.

He will be admitted to the Sumter County Detention Center when he is released from the hospital.
