Former Texas sheriff’s deputy charged in hit-and-run loss of life of California man, prosecutors say

A former Texas sheriff’s deputy has been charged within the hit-and-run loss of life of a California man over the summer season, prosecutors mentioned Monday. 

Giovanni Ceja, 31, pleaded not responsible in Riverside County in reference to the Aug. 7 loss of life of Gilberto Sotelo, the Riverside County District Legal professional’s workplace mentioned. 

Ceja is charged with second-degree homicide and hit-and-run involving loss of life.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Workplace beforehand advised Fox Information Digital that Cejas was visiting household in Riverside when the incident occurred. He borrowed a member of the family’s car and drove to a bar Aug. 6.

He allegedly consumed “a number of” alcoholic drinks earlier than driving again to a member of the family’s house, authorities mentioned. Through the drive, he bumped into Sotelo, who was placing gasoline into his truck on the aspect of a highway. 

“Ceja didn’t cease to render support and fled the scene,” the Bexar County Sheriff’s Workplace mentioned.

Sotelo died on the scene. Ceja was arrested per week later in San Antonio, Texas and extradited to California.

He resigned from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Workplace in lieu of termination and was given a dishonorable discharge.
