Republican politicians across the country reacted with outrage on Tuesday when former President Donald Trump was indicted and pleaded not guilty to 37 federal felonies in a classified file case.

GOP Representative Elise Stefanik called the indictment a “dark day for our country” as “Joe Biden continues to fully arm the federal government against President Trump, his main opponent for the White House in 2024.

“America is founded on the principle of equal justice under the law,” continued the New York Republican. “The American people see the blatant double standard: one set of rules if your last name is Biden or Clinton and another set of rules for everyone else. It has never been more important that we unite behind President Trump’s historic campaign to win the White House, restore the rule of law and save our Republic. God bless America, President Trump and all those targeted by the Biden regime as we continue our efforts to end this corrupt political weaponry and stop the deep state.”

“Make no mistake, today’s arraignment shows a sitting president using his DOJ to put his main political rival in jail,” said Stefanik’s South Carolina Republican colleague, Rep. Nancy Mace, in a statement. “Both sides of the aisle need to be able to put their emotions aside and see how dangerous this sets a precedent.”

The charges include willful withholding of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and false statements.

It is the first time in United States history that a former president has been charged with criminal charges.
