GOP senators urge Biden to crack down on China’s maritime militia after incidents with Philippines coast guard

FIRST ON FOX: GOP Sens. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Jim Risch, R-Idaho, are anticipated to ship a letter urging the Biden administration to extend help for the Philippines following repeated aggressive incidents from Chinese language maritime property within the South China Sea.

“Your administration has repeatedly said that an assault on Philippine public vessels, plane and armed forces – together with these of its Coast Guard within the South China Sea – would invoke the U.S. mutual protection commitments… China’s actions are testing the credibility and worth of those commitments, and we should reply with power,” the senators wrote.

The administration stated Monday it could defend the Philippines towards potential threats below a decades-old treaty after Chinese language ships blocked and collided with two Filipino vessels within the South China Sea.

The U.S. and different allies expressed alarm over the Chinese language motion off Second Thomas Shoal, and Washington particularly renewed a warning that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines below a 1951 Mutual Protection Treaty if Filipino armed forces, ships or plane come below an armed assault, together with “these of its coast guard – anyplace within the South China Sea.”

“The US stands with our Philippine allies within the face of the Individuals’s Republic of China coast guard and maritime militia’s harmful and illegal actions obstructing an Oct. 22 Philippine resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal,” the State Division stated in an announcement issued by its embassy in Manila.

Washington has deployed forces to the disputed sea to patrol the waters and promote freedom of navigation. The transfer has angered Beijing, which has warned the U.S. to cease meddling.

On Sunday, about 5 Chinese language coast guard ships, eight accompanying vessels and two navy ships fashioned a blockade to forestall two Philippine coast guard ships and two boats from delivering meals and different provides to Filipino forces stationed at Second Thomas Shoal aboard a marooned navy ship, Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela stated.
