Greece’s conservative ruling party, New Democracy (ND), won a major victory in Sunday’s elections, while two major left-wing parties, including main opposition SYRIZA, suffered a heavy defeat Monday in what local media described as Greek confidence in Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. . ‘ policies.

The pro-government newspaper Kathimerini reported that the overwhelming victory of the ND party indicated Greeks’ approval of the ruling party’s policies, implying the fall of SYRIZA after the final results and great turmoil within the party.

The newspaper also underlined that the Greek Communist Party (KKE) has increased its attraction especially in city centers and working class neighborhoods, while ultra-conservative nationalist Zafer and left-wing Freedom Route parties showed a surprising performance and took the 6th and 7th places. positions respectively.

Another pro-government newspaper, To Vima, reported that the results were appalling for SYRIZA and its “shocked” leader, Alexis Tsipras, with no plans for a B following the strategic defeat.

The government’s generous social benefits to citizens at a time when the main opposition could not offer realistic plans played a role in the party’s loss of the general elections.

SKAI TV, also a major pro-government private broadcaster, commented that Greek voters did not trust SYRIZA’s pre-election promises, emphasizing that even traditionally social democratic, left-leaning states had shifted to the conservative ND party.

However, the pro-SYRIZA newspaper Avgi stressed that the will of the people should be respected, but warned that “the new situation that is taking shape is not positive for most of the society”.

Earlier on Monday, 99.68% of the votes were counted, with the New Democracy party taking 40.79%, double the 20.07% of the main opposition SYRIZA. Socialist PASOK came in third with 11.46%, followed by the Greek Communist Party with 7.23%. The far-right, populist Greek Solution Party became the country’s 5th largest party with 4.45 percent of the vote.
