Becoming an orthodontist in Ontario requires 10 years of post-secondary education.

– 4 years Bachelor of Science

– 4 years Dentistry School

– 2 years Graduate School of Orthodontics

An aspiring orthodontist must first complete a four-year Bachelor of Science degree to ensure that all required dental training courses have been completed. Individual foundation courses may vary by school, but generally cover the core sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry courses. Interested applicants are advised to check individual schools’ websites for requirements as different schools may have different requirements.

Upon completion (or for some schools, while pursuing) a Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree, a person may take a DAT (Dental Aptitude Test) test administered by the Canadian Dental Association and enroll in a School of Dentistry .

Upon admission to an Ontario School of Dentistry, the student must successfully complete four years of advanced training, which will enable them to become a practicing dentist.

In Ontario, it is very competitive to get into a dental school. As a result, it is not uncommon for students to go abroad, to the US or UK, to view their dental degree.

Upon completion of a four-year dental program, students may choose to enroll in the Graduate School of Orthodontics in a Canadian school (e.g., University of Western Ontario). This application process is highly selective and only the best candidates are admitted to the program, which involves a final two-year training.

As you can see, orthodontists go through many years of education to gain the qualifications and skills needed to treat patients.
