“Justice has been done”. “This can’t keep happening.” The phrases were repeated among a group of neighbors who met to demonstrate the wave of insecurity in the Buenos Aires town of José C. Paz, after the viralization of a video where a man victim of a robbery chases, hits and throws a young thief to a trash can.
The neighbors were giving a television interview this Wednesday when suddenly another woman who was listening to everything asked to speak. “I apologize to everyone. The boy who was thrown into that dump is my son. I’m not ashamed to say it,” she began her story, in amazement.
She said her name was Alejandra and that she was at work, which consists of taking care of a grandfather, when she saw the situation on television and approached in front of the cameras. “I asked for leave at work to show my face,” she recounted.
According to what he said, his 19-year-old son suffers from drug addiction and claimed that Justice does not provide him with solutions to be able to intern him.
“His story is that he is lost in drugs. He is sick with addiction. I want to hospitalize him but Justice does not help me. He tells me that he is older and that if he does not want to, he cannot. Witnesses of the violent episode that ended with their son beaten and with fractures to his arm, wrist and nasal septum, denounced that the young man is a punguist from the area known as “Monedita”.
However, his mother defended him: “What they said that my son spends his time stealing is a lie because he goes out for a while at night. And it must be there when the batons are sent.”
According to the accusation of the witnesses, the young man repeatedly passed near a bicycle that a man had left chained on the sidewalk before entering a hairdresser’s located on La Pampa and Sarmiento streets. And he ended up stealing it.
Hours later, the victim went out to look for the perpetrator in the neighborhood. Upon finding him, she decided to take justice into her own hand.
For nine blocks he gave him a ferocious beating, until the fight reached the door of a butcher shop with a garbage can at the door, which was the final scene of the violent reprisal for the theft.
Despite the futile defense attempt, and already very hurt, the attacker put it in the bin and continued to hit the thief who could hardly react among the debris. That moment was recorded on film.
“I saw the video. It causes me pain, impotence. I took my son to the police station and they returned him to me because he has no record or evidence that he stole that bicycle. It was a great pain to hand over my son,” said the young man’s mother thief with tears in his eyes.
Regarding the specific fact, he said that he is not “satisfied” with what his son did, “but neither with what the kid did to hit him and throw him in the trash, they left him naked.”

“Here they said that he stole the bicycle. He told me that he was standing on the corner and that they gave him the bike to sell. My son was never in prison. In this sense, she said that she cannot support her son because she is a “single mother.” And she concluded with a message looking into the eyes of the rest of the neighbors who were claiming in the place.
