An Indiana man wanted for murder was reportedly taken into custody this week after going to a hospital for a wound he received when a 3-year-old got his hands on a gun.

Authorities discovered that Trayshaun Smith, 23, was wanted for murder in Cook County, Illinois, after checking into a hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, on Thursday night. FOX 59 reportedreferring to the police.

Cook County, in the Chicago area, is just over 100 miles north of Lafayette.

Police were sent to hospital, where Smith and another person shot in the incident had gone with non-life-threatening injuries.

“It was determined that a three-year-old child at that location had access to a gun and fired one bullet hitting two people,” Lafayette Police Department Lieutenant Justin Hartman said of the incident, which took place at an apartment complex on Mount Court in Lafayette, according to ABC News.

It was not clear how the 3-year-old got the gun and no details were given about Smith’s warrant.

The other shooting victim was not identified.

The Lafayette Police Department is coordinating with the Markham, Illinois Police Department following Smith’s arrest.
