The Casildense coach, who recently passed through Sevilla in Spain, returns to Brazil to take charge of the American champion.

Not even a month was Jorge Sampaoli without work. This Friday, Flamengo confirmed as the new coach the Argentine who until March 21 directed Sevilla in Spain.

Through a brief statement posted on its official Twitter account, the Rio de Janeiro club reported that an agreement was signed “to manage the professional soccer squad until December 31, 2024.”

The man from Santa Fe has been in the sights of the Brazilian leaders since Tuesday, when they fired the Portuguese Vítor Pereira after losing the final of the Rio de Janeiro state tournament with Fluminense, in the last setback of a weak start to the season.

The present and the performance of the Mengao team so far in 2023 was not at all what was expected: they were eliminated in the semifinals of the Club World Cup against Ramón Díaz’s Al Hilal, they lost the South American Cup Winners’ Cup against Independiente del Valle, the Supercopa de Brazil against Palmeiras and the recent loss against Fluminense. In addition, his debut in the Copa Libertadores was with a 2-1 defeat in Ecuador against Aucas.

Sampaoli’s current situation is not the best either: he was kicked out of Seville, the club he had arrived at last October to replace Julen Lopetegui and face his second cycle until 2024. However, less than a semester later and with the Andalusian team fighting in the relegation places of the Spanish League, their dismissal was resolved.

Throughout the 19 games played in the domestic tournament led by Sampaoli, Sevilla only won six, drew five and lost eight. And, although he had classified him to the quarterfinals of the Europa League, his farewell had been a fact for some time.

“Sevilla is the first team in my career in which I try a second chance. And I can certify that, despite the fact that the circumstances were different, my affection for this shield does not break and continues to be enormous”, wrote the one who directed the Selection Argentina in the 2018 World Cup in his farewell letter.

Flamengo will be his third excursion in Brazilian soccer, after leading Santos, between 2018 and 2019, and Atlético Mineiro, between 2020 and 2021, and the twelfth club of his career, in which he went through Peruvian, Chilean, Ecuadorian soccer , French and Spanish, in addition to leading the Chilean teams -in which he won the 2015 Copa América- and Argentina.
