Lockport, New York cave tour boat capsizes, police

A tour boat carrying passengers capsized Monday in a cave in Upstate New York, authorities said.

Police and firefighters were working to rescue passengers traveling on the Lockport Cave Tours boat, Lockport police said, without specifying the number of passengers aboard at the time.

The incident took place on the Erie Canal, according to New York State Police at Lockport Barracks.

The boat capsized just before 11:30 a.m. and streets in the area have since been closed to allow rescue vehicle crews to enter the area, police said.

All 36 passengers have since been safely rescued and accounted for, WBEN News Radio reported.

FOX News Digital contacted Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride but didn’t immediately hear back.

The company’s website describes the excursion as “a guided historical walking tour” that includes a boat ride through the cave system, which was created about 150 years ago. According to the site, boat tours have been conducted through the cave since 1977.

The water in the cave is about 4 to 6 feet deep, WIVB-TV previously reported.
