Luton Town promoted to the English Premier League

Luton Town advanced to the English Premier League for the first time in history, beating Coventry City 6-5 on penalties in Saturday’s Championship playoff final.

Penalties determined the winner after the extra time played at Wembley Stadium ended 1-1.

Winning against Coventry City in penalty shootouts, Luton Town joined Sheffield United and champion Burnley, previously in the 2023-24 Premier League.

“I’m very proud to be a part of this club. The players, the coaching staff, the board, the fans deserve it. They’ve been through a lot, but I’m very, very proud,” said Luton’s Rob Edwards. Said the mayor.

Luton Town will play in England’s top league for the first time since 1992 when it was named the First Division.

The Premier League was formed later that year, and 1992-93 was the inaugural season of the FA Premier League.

During the 2017-2018 season, Luton Town was playing in England’s fourth tier division, League Two.

They played in the Championship in 2019-2023 and, after four seasons in England’s second-tier league, have finally reached the Premier League.

Located in northwest London, Luton is a town of approximately 225,000 inhabitants.

The team’s Kenilworth Road stadium is the smallest among the sides in the 2023-24 Premier League season, with only 10,073 seats.
