French President Emmanuel Macron urged the government on Sunday to take all necessary measures to restore order in the country after the fifth night of violent unrest caused by the police killing of a teenager last week.

According to BFMTV, Macron held a meeting at the Elysee Palace with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and several other ministers to discuss the ongoing situation in the country.

During the meeting, he asked the ministers “to continue to do everything in their power to restore order and ensure a return to calm”.

He also stressed the importance of launching a thorough investigation to gain a deeper understanding of the situation as it emerged.

Macron will meet with President of the French National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivet and Senate President Gerard Larcher on Monday, and then meet with 220 mayors affected by the protests at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials deployed armored vehicles in the city center of Marseille to counter the possibility of renewed protests.

Special police units are also on duty in Lyon after nights of tense protests in the city.

Footage circulating on social media shows a group of far-right activists walking the streets of Lyon chanting slogans such as “France belongs to the French”.
