A Malaysian woman was killed when strong winds blew the roof off a nearby school during a storm, which then landed on top of her home, crushing her.

The freak accident happened on Tuesday evening when part of the roof of SMK Seg Hwa in Segamat district of Johor flew off and landed on Madam V. Mahadevi’s house, which is next to the school.

That caused the roof over the kitchen to collapse on the 55-year-old, killing her instantly.

Abd Rahim Rahmat, commander of the Segamat fire and rescue department, said five firefighters rushed to the scene after an emergency call at 7:41 p.m.

“Local residents helped to remove her body from a pile of rubble. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer,” he told reporters.

Ms. Mahadevi’s grief-stricken family tried to come to terms with the incident.

“Our family is still shocked and traumatized by what happened. For now, we are staying with a relative,” said Ms. Mahadevi’s brother-in-law, Mr. Tamil Selvam Periyasamy Bala.

Her brother Mr. V. Bala said that Ms. Mahadevi’s husband, Mr. P. Saravanan, heard a loud crash followed by screams coming from the kitchen.
