Raymond Johansen does not think that the MDGs can expect a major impact on climate and environmental policy among the citizenry. In fact, he takes credit for much of the climate policy implemented over the past eight years.

Wednesday’s city council meeting is probably Raymond Johansen’s last as city council chairman. Here together with retiring financial councilor Einar Wilhelmsen (MDG).

– The MDGs have taught us a lot about environmental and climate policy. Not least from me, Raymond Johansen tells Aftenposten.

– This applies to the big structural issues, such as the fact that we acquired municipal ownership of Hafslund, that we have the carbon capture plant in Klemetsrud, which is responsible for 17 percent of Oslo’s emissions. He delves deeper into the structural factors that have a major impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

On Wednesday, Johansen took part in a city council meeting as city council chairman – probably for the very last time.

All arrows point to a civilian city council taking over Oslo’s government from October 25, when the newly elected city council is formed.

Guess changing pages is giving up

However, just three days after the election, the Green Party came out and announced that it was willing to work with the civil side. This while they are still in the municipal council together with the PvdA and SV.

Johansen has little confidence that the MDGs will gain much traction among the citizenry.

– It will depend on the MDGs themselves, but if they switch sides, I will see it as a sign that they have given up major environmental and climate ambitions.

– Do you find it a shame that the MDG is courting the citizenry while they sit with you in the city council?

– It takes a long time before things affect me personally, then the parties can make the choices they make. I have been very satisfied with the collaboration with De Groene Party for eight years.

– The MDG has been a driving force

Councilor for the environment and transport Sirin Stav (MDG) says he is happy that the PvdA feels ownership of the city council’s green policy.

– I am very happy that Raymond Johansen has embraced the green policy that we have been fighting for in the municipal council for eight years. I am very happy with the fact that it has become a joint project that Raymond is also proud of and stands for.

– Do you recognize that the MDG has learned a lot about green politics from the Labor Party and Raymond Johansen?

– I recognize myself in the fact that we have had good cooperation for eight years, in the interest of the people and the environment in the city.

For now, it is likely that the Conservatives and Liberals will form a minority city council in Oslo. It has not been clarified what kind of cooperation such a municipal council can have with the MDGs.
