On Thursday, the provincial MECr of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, transferred 24 brand new homes to eligible beneficiaries in the Metro Grounds Development in George. The transfer comes just under 9 months after turning the sod.

Four of the beneficiaries received a unique title deed with their house keys. The department wants to repeat this in other projects where not only the key transfer takes place, but also the title deed.

Many of the beneficiaries had been waiting for a home for years and were justifiably emotional yesterday. Mr. Jacob Loggenberg (84): “I am eternally grateful for this gift from the Lord and our Western Cape Government (WCG). I think I will need a day or two, for now it’s just incredible, thanks MEC”.

It is envisaged that the Metro Ground Development project will create 436 residential units upon completion of the project. The project progressed at a rapid pace and is uniquely led by one of the young site managers, Mrs. Thandeka Vabaza (34), who has almost ten years of experience in the industry. She is an example of WCG’s efforts to create opportunity and hope for youth. To date, 156 jobs have been created and 20 small, micro and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have benefited from the development since October 2022.

Reflecting on the milestones achieved in this project, MEC Simmers said: “When I submitted my budget vote for 2023/24, I made a commitment to accelerate rent security. Today we showed that it is possible to provide title deeds and the house keys for our beneficiaries so that they are really authorized. We have also proven that we can build and deliver houses in less than 9 months with the right partnerships. That has been the case with the partnership of Garden District Municipality, George Township and our county government.

The project is scheduled to be delivered in the 2nd quarter of 2024. “We expect to create more economic and employment opportunities in the coming phases of the project. I am proud that a young project manager has shown that we can accelerate housing construction under the right circumstances,” said MEC Simmers.
