Several people were killed in a single-vehicle accident in New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The exact number of people killed in the crash on Interstate 25 near Hatch was not available.
“Police can confirm there was a single-vehicle accident with multiple fatalities involving undocumented individuals,” said New Mexico State Police spokesman Wilson Silver.
A crash reconstruction team was still investigating Saturday night, Silver said.
More details about the crash or the casualties were not immediately available.
The crash the highway closed in both directions for much of the day, according to NBC affiliate KTSM of Albuquerque, but the roadway reopened in the evening.
There are US Border Patrol checkpoints in the area. Spokesmen for US Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday night.
