A man was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies after opening fire on Tuesday, injuring two deputies executing a federal search warrant at a New York state home, authorities said.

One of the two Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies underwent emergency leg surgery and the other was treated at a hospital and released, said Sheriff Michael Zurlo. Anthony Zaremski, 23, died in a hospital, he said.

Authorities executed the search warrant in connection with a comprehensive narcotics investigation being conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Zurlo said. They seized several kilograms of cocaine, about 50 handguns and rifles and “hundreds of thousands” of fentanyl pills from three other locations involved in the investigation, he said.
