Lagos, Nigeria

Nigeria on Monday opened its first private oil refinery, built by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

President Muhammadu Buhari said the establishment and commissioning of the refinery in the Ibeju-Lekki region of Lagos state, Nigeria’s economic hub, underlined what nations can achieve when entrepreneurs are supported.

“This mega-industry we are launching today is a clear example of what can be achieved when entrepreneurs are encouraged and supported.”

Buhari said that his government has created a favorable environment for investors and encourages businesses to develop in the country.

He said he was confident his successor, Bola Tinubu, would maintain the business climate when he took office on May 29.

He called on African countries to come together to integrate their economic agreements and remove trade barriers across the continent.

Dangote said the refinery was set up to promote oil self-sufficiency and global competitiveness in the country.

He said the products leaving the facility are designed to meet the highest quality standards, such as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Kerosene (Diesel) and Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), among others.

The presidents of Ghana, Togo, Senegal and Niger participated in the appointment.
