A fireplace ripped via a historic deserted highschool in Indiana late Saturday night time, leaving former college students reacting on social media.

Gary Fireplace Division shared photos of flames taking pictures via the previous Ralph Waldo Emerson Excessive College on Fb. The division was assisted by firefighters from Merrillville and Munster.

“That is so unhappy. I’m eternally [an] Emersonian,” one lady wrote in response.

The college was the primary highschool in-built Gary, Indiana, in response to Ball State College. It was constructed in 1909, and has been on the Nationwide Register of Historic Locations since 1995.  

Some say the constructing stood vacant for much too lengthy after closing in 2008.

The constructing had seen vandalism and even crime over time, in response to reviews. A 17-year-old Chicago woman’s physique was discovered strangled within the former highschool within the 700 block of East seventh Avenue in 2015, ABC Chicago reported. 

Gary Fireplace Division instructed the TV station the fireplace was put out about 3:45 a.m. Sunday, and a big collapse of the constructing occurred.

Arson investigators are trying into the reason for the fireplace. The same hearth reportedly tore via the constructing months in the past. No accidents have been reported. 

A spokeswoman for Gary Neighborhood College Company says the district now not owns Emerson.
