A transgender man got a Father’s Day spotlight on NPR for giving birth to two daughters in one piece on Saturday.

Alongside the story of a military father and immigrant refugee parent, the government-funded news site described 37-year-old Kayden Coleman, who went through a surprise pregnancy after temporarily stopping hormones for top surgery.

“In 2013, he had just had top surgery — a double mastectomy — and had temporarily stopped taking hormones for the procedure. Coleman, who is transgender, said doctors had told him he couldn’t get pregnant. A few years later , thinking he had taken hormones long enough to prevent another pregnancy, he found himself pregnant again,” the article read. “Today he is raising two young daughters.”

NPR’s piece also touched on issues Coleman faced as a pregnant man, along with the “perceptions and expectations” of having children.

“I’ve experienced a lot of opposition and discrimination within the medical system based on preconceived notions of what a pregnant person should look like,” Coleman told NPR.

“I had to convince a lot of people that I was pregnant and that I wasn’t just some strange man trying to infiltrate the gynecologist’s office,” Coleman added. “I’ve been offered an abortion an astronomical number of times. I think that stems from the idea that people think that transgender people don’t want or shouldn’t have children.”

The article also enabled Coleman to take a stand against perceived misconceptions about transgender parents.

“One of the biggest things people get wrong is that we hate our bodies, so anything that is even remotely feminine is something we will reject – including pregnancy. For those of us who identify more with the masculine spectrum, just because we identify as such doesn’t take away our desire to have children. If we have the body parts to do so, why not?” Coleman said.

COVER OF THE FASHION MAGAZINE WITH PREGNANT TRANSGENDER MAN EXCEEDS OUTrage: ‘COULDN’T SIN ANY LOWER’

The concept of a “pregnant man” or a “person in labor” has been promoted in the wake of politicians and corporations promoting transgender politics. A topless pregnant transgender man recently appeared in the June issue of Glamor UK in celebration of Pride Month. Both this cover and the terms “pregnant man” and “person in labor” have since received backlash.

Meanwhile, Coleman argued that there are benefits to being a trans father, such as “insight” into the female experience.

“Because I’m a trans dad, I was assigned a female at birth and I was basically raised to conform to societal norms of what a girl is supposed to be, how a girl is supposed to act. I think because of that I parenting inherently have a kind of nurturing side. I also have an insight into how women are viewed by society,” Coleman said.
