As Pakistan sets to celebrate its National Day on March 23rd, it is important to understand that this day in Pakistan’s history is more than just a reflection on the visionary ideals introduced by Quaid-I-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah at the time of the country’s creation. Pakistan Day, Commemorates the Lahore Resolution passed on 23 March 1940. This resolution, based on the two-nation theory, which advocated for a separate state for Muslims, cleared the ground for Pakistan’s formation on August 14, 1947. The demand for a separate Muslim state in the Indian subcontinent arose from the recognition of differences between Muslims and Hindus.

Muslims feared that their future in an independent, democratic India ruled by the Congress Party, dominated by a Hindu majority, would be insecure. They advocated for areas where they were the majority to be formed into a sovereign state. This separate state would allow them to govern their lives according to their beliefs, both individually and collectively. As we approach this day, it is critical not just to remember historical events but also to understand the deep significance of Quaid-i-Azam’s vision for Pakistan’s place in today’s world and the unyielding spirit and sacrifices of the Pakistani people in preserving and upholding Quaid’s Pakistan.

On March 23, 1940, in Lahore, over one lakh people, including Muslim leaders from Bengal to the Frontier, gathered under the inspiring leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. They came together under the auspices of the All India Muslim League (AIML) with a resolution to establish Pakistan, envisioning it as the largest Muslim state in the world. Despite the deliberate avoidance of the name “Pakistan” due to potential opposition from the Hindu Congress and the British Raj, the astute handling of the situation by Muslim leaders led the Hindu press to coin the term “Pakistan” for this aspiration. The resolution was presented in the session on 23rd March and approved next day after fully debating it, in which leaders from all parts of the subcontinent participated. This event demonstrated the unity of Muslims across the Indian subcontinent, including both the majority and minority Muslim provinces of British India, who wholeheartedly supported Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s vision for Pakistan.

The Objectives Resolution set the direction for Pakistan’s constitutional development. Following extensive debates, the country saw the creation of two constitutions in 1956 and 1962, both of which were eventually replaced by 1973 constitution. The Constitution of 1973, was formulated with the consensus of nearly all political parties. In 2010, the 18th Constitutional Amendment restored the Constitution to its original form as envisioned by the Objectives Resolution of 1949. The Objectives Resolution emphasized the observance of democratic principles, freedom, equality, tolerance, and social justice, as outlined in Islam. It also guaranteed minorities the right to freely practice their religions and preserve their cultures.

The commemoration activities on March 23rd are profoundly ingrained in the nation’s culture. The day is observed as a public holiday in Pakistan. From offering prayers to paying homage to leaders such as Quaid-I-Azam and Allama Iqbal; to the hoisting of the national flag and the Armed Forces’ grand Pakistan Day parade in Islamabad. These traditions represent not only reverence but also a constant commitment to the principles that continue to shape the nation and their resilience. Quaid-I-Azam’s vision, as expressed by insights from the Nazria-I-Pakistan Council, extends beyond independence. It envisions a Pakistan founded on the values of justice, equality, and economic progress. As we approach Pakistan Day 2024, it is imperative to analyze the nation’s accomplishments that it gained through the efforts and hard work of its people and state institutions.

Pakistan’s foreign policy under Quaid-e-Azam stressed compassion, charity, and fair play, while also acknowledging the significance of a strong defense. When it comes to preservance of the beloved homeland, Pakistan’s Armed Forces have remained steadfast in fulfilling their rightful duties. Notably, Pakistan’s military has assumed the vital task of safeguarding the nation’s integrity, and honor, demonstrating a dedication to national security. It has served an essential part in preserving law and order, safeguarding borders, and forging unity in the face of internal and external threats. Pakistan Army has actively participated in nation-building efforts by undertaking infrastructure building, disaster relief, and rescue operations. This commitment was evident from the outset, notably in 1948 when Pakistan engaged in full-scale war with India over Kashmir- the Jugular vein of Pakistan. Subsequently, Pakistan’s Armed Forces continued to play a pivotal role in defending the nation during significant conflicts such as the 1965 war, the 1971 war, and the Kargil war in 1999, all fought against a volatile enemy at the gates.

Beyond these conflicts, Pakistan is a resilient nation with a rich history of overcoming challenges. Since gaining independence in 1947, Pakistan has consistently emerged victorious in many challenging situations. Situated in a strategically significant location, Pakistan is influenced by developments on its eastern and western borders. The global security environment is evolving rapidly, impacting both developed and developing countries. As a key player in regional security dynamics, Pakistan has experienced various effects from these changes. Pakistan has made significant strides in reducing terrorist attacks through successful counterterrorism operations. This success is attributed to the unwavering determination of Pakistan’s security forces, who have worked tirelessly to prevent terrorism from taking hold. By collaborating with regional and international partners, Pakistan has created a safer environment for its citizens. Despite threats to national security, Pakistan’s Armed Forces have consistently stood at the forefront in ensuring national security.

Moving beyond national interest and perseverance, Quaid’s vision advocated peaceful coexistence and friendly interactions with neighboring countries and the international community. In compliance with it, Pakistan Army is performing an important role in maintaining peace and ensuring prosperity through active participation in UN Peacekeeping Missions. Pakistan takes great pride in its extensive and enduring contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts, spanning over six decades. As one of the oldest and significant troop-contributing nations, Pakistan deeply values the crucial role played by the “blue helmets” in maintaining security and stability in conflict-ridden regions worldwide. Since 1960, more than 200,000 Pakistani servicemen and women have demonstrated honor and valor while serving in 46 UN Missions across nearly every continent. Among these dedicated peacekeepers, 181 of Pakistan’s bravest hearts have made the ultimate sacrifice in the noble pursuit of international peace and security.

Pakistan’s Armed Forces, are determined to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and economic prosperity both domestically and abroad. As we commemorate Pakistan Day, we acknowledge the unshakable resolve and sacrifices of our Armed Forces, who are working relentlessly to protect the country’s sovereignty, and promoting its growth. As we look to the future, let us be inspired by Quaid-i-Azam’s ideas and renew our commitment to create a nation based on justice, equality, and togetherness. In doing so, we celebrate our founding father’s heritage while also paving the road for future generations to enjoy a greater and more affluent future.
