SURREY, BC — Homicide investigators in Surrey, BC, have released descriptions of the murderers of a Sikh temple leader, but say they need video to solve the crime.

Sergeant Timothy Pierotti says the two suspects in Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s shooting are heavier men who wore face coverings.

Pierotti says that after shooting Nijjar outside Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh gurdwara, the men are believed to have escaped on foot through a nearby park and met a vehicle on the other side.

He says detectives from BC’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are looking for witnesses or video footage from around the park or near the temple on Sunday night, including footage of Tesla vehicles that don’t need to be engaged to turn on the dash cameras.

Pierotti says they have no reason to believe that the Sikh community is at risk because Nijjar’s shooting was a target.

Nijjar organized an unofficial Khalistan referendum on a separate Sikh state in India, and his lawyer said Nijjar’s safety had been compromised after the Indian government offered a reward for his arrest.

According to police, Nijjar was shot dead around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night as he left the parking lot of the gurdwara where he was president.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on June 21, 2023.
