Most insurance plans, including employees comp & no-fault, do not allow patients to be treated for the same condition with both chiropractic and physical therapy for the same period of time. Sometimes the patient will not tell the healthcare provider that he is already in treatment. Then the provider sees the patient, submits the claim, but is rejected because the patient is already receiving care.
If you provide physical therapy, or if you are a chiropractor, it is important that you ask the patient if they are already being treated or have been treated for this condition, and if so, by whom. Don’t just assume that the patient knows to tell you.
If the patient informs you that they are currently receiving care, you should inform them that the services are not covered. If the patient still wishes to receive treatment, you must have him/her sign a waiver stating that he/she agrees to the treatment, that he/she understands that it is not covered by insurance and that he/she accepts financial responsibility for the services. The waiver must be signed each time the patient comes for treatment.
You don’t want to make the mistake of treating a patient with chiropractic manipulations multiple times before finding out they are also seeing another physical therapy provider for the same condition. Your claims are denied and it’s too late to get the patient to sign a waiver.
The patient might not know it mattered, or maybe they just didn’t care. It really doesn’t matter because either way, you’ll run out of money for your services. So be sure to cover yourself by asking the patient on their intake form if they are currently being treated or if they have been treated for the same condition by another healthcare provider. Then, based on how they answer that question, you can ask them about their other treatment. This way you can be sure that you get paid for your services.
