Youssef En-Nesyri scored his 50th Sevilla goal to put the hosts ahead

Manchester United were dumped out of the quarter-finals of the Europa League after a terrible second-leg defeat to Sevilla.

United were well below their best – creating next to nothing in attack, being overrun in midfield and making two terrible mistakes in defense – as they left Europe wailing.

The Spanish side took the lead after eight minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished after a terrible error from Harry Maguire, and Sevilla doubled their lead shortly after half time with a looping header from defender Loic Bade.

Sevilla’s victory – and United’s humiliation – was completed 10 minutes from time as En-Nesyri again took advantage of a shocking error, this time by goalkeeper David de Gea, to complete the win.

After leading 2-0 in the first leg at Old Trafford, Erik Ten Hag’s side conceded five times in the space of 90 minutes – two late own goals in Manchester and three in Spain – to boost their chance of European success .

This was the first of a series of potentially season-defining games for United – they take on Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday and they play an important Premier League game at Tottenham Hotspur on April 27 – and they have test passed completely.

Meanwhile, Sevilla will play Juventus in a two-legged semi-final on May 11-18. The Italian side defeated Sporting 2–1 on aggregate in their quarter-final.

Maguire’s blunder starts United’s nightmare

After giving Sevilla a big helping hand to get back level with the second own goal in the first leg at Old Trafford, United captain Maguire fell short of the opening goal here.

He was unaided by his goalkeeper as De Gea played a short pass to him on the edge of the area as three Sevilla players converged in an impressively coordinated press.

However, Maguire should have done better than making a pass to Erik Lamela, just six feet in front of him. The ball bounced back to En-Nesyri – one of the stars of Morocco’s 2022 World Cup exploits – who finished past the hapless De Gea.

It set the tone for the first half, which saw Sevilla cheered by the deafening crowd at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium against a nervous and uncreative United.

Sevilla may be 13th in La Liga and have spent the better part of a poor season battling relegation, but they looked revitalized under Jose Luis Mendillibar, their third permanent manager of the season.

A stunning rabona cross from Nemanja Gudelj after half an hour showed their confidence, while Luis Ocampos looked to have doubled their lead before the break with a fine finish from the edge of the area, only for a lengthy video assistant referee to determine that Marcos Acuna had was narrowly offside in the build-up.

Raucous crowd roars Sevilla to the last four

United, meanwhile, looked devoid of attacking ability without the suspended Bruno Fernandes or Marcus Rashford, who was benched after a groin injury. Anthony Martial started up front against the side where he spent part of last season on loan, but had to leave injured early in the second half.

Rashford, United’s top goalscorer this season, was sent off at half-time to replace the ineffective Jadon Sancho, but before he could even touch the ball, his side were two goals down.

Ivan Rakitic’s corner kick came off the shoulder of former Nottingham Forest mercenary Bade, shot over De Gea and went in over the crossbar.

It summed up a terrible night for United – Casemiro was uncharacteristically poor in possession, while in defense the injury-enforced absences of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane left gaping fissures of confidence.

But the worst was saved for last. With United chasing the game late, De Gea rushed his goal to try and clear a long ball, only to cut his attempted half-volley and slip En-Nesyri into an empty net.

Sevilla have now progressed through all seven UEFA Cup and Europa League quarter-finals they have played in and have won all six competitions when they previously reached this stage.
