Some flights to the New York City area were delayed Wednesday and some were briefly halted due to reduced visibility from smoke from wildfires from Canada.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) slowed traffic but lifted a ground stop on Wednesday afternoon for flights from the upper Midwest and East Coast to New York LaGuardia International Airport.

United, the largest airline in Newark, said it was adjusting its schedule, while Delta, the largest at LaGuardia, said it does not expect cancellations at this time due to the visibility issues.

Hundreds of wildfires in Canada have created a blanket of smoky air, setting off health alarms in US cities.

The FAA said Newark was currently experiencing delays averaging 82 minutes, while average LaGuardia ground delays are about two hours and departure delays are about 30 minutes.

The New York City area has the most congested airspace in the United States.
