Several Los Angeles Independence Day fireworks displays have been canceled due to new environmental regulations restricting the use of explosives over water, a report said.

In late May, the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board approved a new protective fireworks permit requiring legal shows to adopt practices to reduce plastic and other pollution and pyrotechnic waste that could fall into oceans or marinas, the agency reported. Los Angeles Times.

Given the proximity of the Fourth of July celebration, the board said in a statement that officials “have approached well-known fireworks displays over coastal waters in Los Angeles and Ventura counties to explain permit requirements and provide assistance with permit applications.”

The Times reportedly reported that most of the shows scheduled for Independence Day indicated they will meet the new standard, but at least five, including two in Redondo Beach that planned to use the Pyro Spectaculars by Souza company, have refused to comply with the to keep up with new restrictions.

“We cannot and do not want to risk the safety of our staff and the public to comply with the restrictive rules,” CEO Jim Souza said in a statement to the Times. “The water board has set the new regulations quickly and unilaterally, with little input from us, one of the largest and most experienced fireworks producers in the country.”

A federal lawsuit filed earlier this year by the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation related to the annual July 3 Big Bang on the Bay fireworks display in Long Beach. federal Clean Water Act to adhere to standards and approve mitigation plans.

The Times noted that a judge did not rule in favor of the environmentalists, but the trial uncovered “at least one case of ‘firework-related pollutants’, eventually prompting the Los Angeles Water Board to issue new rules for the shows to issue.

“I’ve lived here a long time and I think this is the first year that there are no fireworks in King Harbor,” Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand reportedly said at a council meeting earlier this month.
