Chrome’s overall share, on the other hand, is greatly reduced by the smartphone’s market share. The Google-made browser controls more than 77% of the desktop market, while the mobile share is around 68%.

Being just a mobile browser, Samsung Internet ranks third in the industry by total market share.

It also demonstrates the dominance of mobile devices in South Africa.

The strong South African mobile market shares of Google and, to a lesser extent, Samsung Internet are not surprising.

Samsung leads the country’s smartphone industry, thanks to its wide selection of affordable to mid-range handsets.

In January 2023, the company’s smartphones accounted for 49.07% of views in South Africa’s mobile vendor sector, a modest increase from 48.04% in January 2022.

Samsung devices come pre-installed with Google Chrome and Samsung Internet.

While Apple and Safari are similar, the Cupertino-based tech company has a much lower percentage of the South African mobile market.
