According to a Sudanese official, an agreement has been reached for a meeting in two weeks between the Chief of General Staff of Sudan, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

According to local medics, around 1,000 people have been killed and thousands injured in clashes between the army and the paramilitary RSF since mid-April.

Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, was deputy chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council before being sacked by al-Burhan amid tensions over the integration of the paramilitary group into the armed forces, a key condition of Sudan’s transition deal with political groups.

“We agreed with the mediators to hold a meeting between al-Burhan and Hemedti in two weeks,” Sovereignty Council Deputy Chairman Malik Agar told Al Jazeera television.

He said that the issue of ceasefire and humanitarian aid will be discussed at the scheduled meeting.

Agar, however, did not provide further details.

No confirmation of the meeting has yet been received from al-Burhan or Hemedti.

Kenyan President William Ruto said on Monday his country is committed to bringing al-Burhan and Hemedti together to end the conflict in Sudan.

According to Agar, al-Burhan said he was willing to negotiate to put an end to the conflict.

“There are no conditions for starting negotiations,” he said.

There has been no functioning government in Sudan since October 2021, when Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok dismissed the transitional government and declared a state of emergency, in a move widely condemned by the military as a “coup” by political forces.

The transition period, which began in August 2019 following the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir, was originally scheduled to result in elections in early 2024.
