Fearing attempts to skew the election results, some voters attempted to make a statement. A voter in central Nakhon Nayok province stood at the polls and loudly cursed anyone who tried to cheat in this election before casting his vote, the Prachatai news outlet reported.

Political youth activist Parit Chiwarak, one of the main leaders of anti-government student protests that erupted in 2020, went to vote with a cardboard box over his head. Scribbled on the box were the words, “Election Commission, don’t cheat.”

There are about 52 million eligible voters in these elections, and the Thai Election Commission expects 80 percent of them to vote. In the 2019 election, 74.69 percent of voters cast their ballots.

The voter mood was calm and hopeful. For example, Ms. Sariya Kanrayanamit was optimistic about the changes that will come after this election.

“I think a lot of people will vote this time because we want to give Thailand a new future,” the 50-year-old accountant told the Straits Times. “I’m excited about the leader that will emerge from this.”
