BANGKOK – After Thailand’s generals staged the most recent coup in 2014, which toppled a government led by the Pheu Thai party, ambitious plans were made to thwart the populist policies it allegedly pursued. Much of this caution has been cast aside as political parties rush towards the May 14 general election.
Faced with a cacophony of campaign pledges, the Election Commission in March demanded political parties explain how they plan to fund their policies. That failed to deliver on the promises of giveaways.
